Today, Starlight Apps LLP is thrilled to announce a significant update to Pencilera, just a little over a month after its initial launch. Pencilera has been hugely successful in its first month, being recognised by major technology outlets and Apple itself. We’ve been focused to fixing bugs and adding features that were widely requested by a lot of users, and completely re-writing the app’s camera handling from the ground up to improve performance and set the foundation for future updates.
Introducing Remote Flip
We noticed that the new Apple Pencil Pro comes with two gestures: double tap and squeeze. Instead of assigning the same action of capturing photos to both the gestures, we added the ability to assign either gesture to now switch the camera lens. Now, users with an iPad Air M2 or iPad Pro M4 can use their Apple Pencil Pro to remotely switch between camera lenses, without having to touch the device.
Flash Support
Pencilera 1.0 did not support controlling your iPad’s flash, and defaulted to using a flash for photos taken via the front camera. With Pencilera 2.0, you can now choose between Auto, On or Off for your flash setting, on both the front and back cameras on supported iPad models. It’s a quality of life improvement that we’re sure all users will appreciate.
Zoom & Switch between Lenses.
If you have an iPad Pro with two cameras at the back, or an iPad with a Center Stage Camera, you can now switch between the lenses or zoom into the subject to take even better photos. This enables users to take full advantage of their iPad hardware when using Pencilera.
Performance enhancements & M4 iPad Pro Support
Users reported that the app would not function as expected on the M4 iPad Pro models. This has now been fixed, and we’re excited to welcome M4 iPad Pro users to try out the app once again. This fix has been facilitated by a complete re-work of the app’s camera handling logic, which not just helps fix this issue but has also paved the way for all the other features that we released with Pencilera 2.0, and has set the groundwork for some incredibly exciting updates in the future that we can’t wait to share with you. This update includes new animations, noticeable performance improvements, and overall better reliability.
While Pencilera 2.0 may appear to be a minor update on the surface, the changes it introduces are far from small. By rebuilding the app's camera handling from the ground up, we have created a much more robust platform, and features such as remote flip and flash support are only the start of the upgrades enabled by this re-work. Pencilera retains its familiar user interface, and stays true to its mission of letting Apple Pencil users make the most out of their Pencil. You can install the latest update from the iPad App Store. We’re excited to see Pencilera continuing to capture smiles around the world!
